Cooperative Doctoral Platform
Cooperative doctorates at the Research Campus of Central Hessen are doctorates which are supervised jointly by at least two persons who belong to different universities at the Research Campus. In order to conduct these cooperative doctorates, the Research Campus has a Cooperative Doctoral Platform. Doctoral procedures are conducted pursuant to the regulations of the “Statutes on Conducting Cooperative Doctoral Procedures at the Justus Liebig University Giessen, the Philipps-Universität Marburg and the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen University of Applied Sciences" , which are supplemented by the pertinent doctoral regulations in place in the faculties of the participating universities.
The Cooperative Doctoral Platform offers qualified graduates of the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen University of Applied Sciences or other universities of applied sciences fair access to a doctorate conducted in cooperation with the University of Giessen or the University of Marburg. Transparent structures and established quality assurance measures and practices in the doctoral system guarantee the highest standards of quality.
In addition, the Cooperative Doctoral Platform of the Research Campus offers you
- advice and support when filling in your application form
- help in looking for suitable supervisors
- advice and support in conflict situations and with issues concerning the doctorate
- access to subject-specific and general qualification courses for doctoral students
Given an appropriate thematic focus of the doctoral project, a cooperative doctorate at the Research Campus is possible in one of the faculties of the Justus Liebig University Giessen or the Philipps-Universität Marburg that correspond to the areas of expertise of the professors at the Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen University of Applied Sciences.
Currently, the following doctoral degrees can be obtained through the Cooperative Doctoral Platform:
- Mathematics (Dr. rer. nat.)
- Computer Science (Dr. rer. nat.)
- Physics (Dr. rer. nat.)
- Biology (Dr. rer. nat.)
- Chemistry (Dr. rer. nat.)
- Pharmacy (Dr. rer. nat.)
- Geosciences and Geography (Dr. rer. nat.)

In order to conduct cooperative doctorates, the Research Campus of Central Hessen has established a Doctoral Committee comprising professors of the three participating universities. This committee supports the participating universities in cooperative doctoral procedures. It examines the criteria which must be fulfilled for acceptance in a cooperative doctoral procedure and the academic quality of the applications of those seeking acceptance as doctoral candidates. In each case, the Doctoral Committee submits a recommendation to the Examination Board of the university faculty in which the doctoral project is to be conducted. The decision to accept or reject the applicant is made by the Examination Board of the university faculty. The Doctoral Committee ensures that graduates of universities of applied sciences have unbiased access to a doctoral degree.
The Management Office supports early career researchers before and during the cooperative doctoral process. It is a contact point for advice and conflict situations and the place where applications for acceptance as doctoral candidate are passed on to the Doctoral Committee or the university faculty. The Management Office acts as an interface between the university faculties and the Doctoral Committee.
