FCMH Workplace Experience: Interdisciplinary Research Insights for Early Career Researchers
The ‘FCMH Workplace Experience’ programme offers a unique opportunity for interdisciplinary research insights and cooperation between young researchers and various institutions within the FCMH network.
About the programme
With the ‘FCMH Workplace Experience’ programme, young researchers immerse themselves in other working groups within the FCMH network for a period of one week to two months. In this programme, the network comprises the three FCHM universities (THM, UMR, JLU) as well as the Max Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology (Marburg), the Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe (Marburg), the Fraunhofer IME - Bioresources Division (Giessen), and the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research (Bad Nauheim).
Young researchers gain a unique insight into other research environments - also across disciplines, have access to other research infrastructures, expand their networks and can explore different career paths. In this way, the programme strengthens their professional development and expands their research skills.
The FCMH office supports early career researchers in their search for a suitable host and accompanies the process from matching to the creation of a visit plan and implementation. After the host enquiry and successful matching, contacts are made and a visit plan is drawn up. During the ‘FCMH Workplace Experience’, the young researchers are accompanied by a mentor from the host working group and supported by the office.
How it Works:
For more information, visit our website:
1. Submit Your Request: Contact the program coordinator at the FCMH
Office either with a general interest in participating
or with a specific desired host in mind.
2. Host Search: If you don‘t have a preferred host, we will help you fi nd a
suitable one, facilitate contact, and support you in developing a visit
plan with the host.
3. Execution: You will visit the hosts research group for one week to
two months, gaining valuable experience in a different research environment.

Testimonial
‘I would strongly recommend such a programme to anyone who is looking to develop their own independent line of research. In challenging yourself to develop a cross-disciplinary project, you are building the foundations for a unique career trajectory. I have strong skills and experience working with model organisms, but never had an opportunity to extend this expertise to real-world microorganisms with critical impacts for carbon cycling. The Lab Rotation broadened my perspective on the contributions I can make in a new field and made me excited about the discoveries to be made there.’ - Julian Pietsch
