What We Do

Our Goals

The Research Campus Mittelhessen is a cross-university institution of Justus Liebig University Giessen, Philipps-Universität Marburg and Technische Hochschule Mittelhessen University of Applied Sciences in accordance with § 53 of the Hessian Higher Education Act. The fields of action of our joint initiative are research and transfer, promotion of early-career researchers and research infrastructure.

We create a structural and strategic added value for the participating partners, the region and top-level research in Germany and thus realize the following goals:

  • We manifest future-oriented structures for the promotion of top-level research and long-term and committed cooperation.
  • Our researchers work on new "emerging fields" in jointly defined top research areas.
  • We promote knowledge and technology transfer: Results of joint top-level research are implemented early and comprehensively in an application-oriented manner - both in collaborations with industry and in continuing education - and communicated to society.
  • We improve the conditions for the acquisition of new (collaborative) projects and the establishment of new research institutions.
  • We promote cooperative doctorates and the qualification of early-career researchers. Central Hessen will become even more attractive and internationally visible as a research and education region.

Services

With the Research Campus of Central Hessen, we strengthen regional collaborative education in particular through the following measures:

  • The Management Office of the FCMH acts as a central contact point for cross-university collaborations in the areas of research, transfer, promotion of early-career researchers, research infrastructure and for cooperative doctoral candidates.
  • We support researchers in finding implementation partners within the network, organise networking and exchange meetings of researchers as well as cross-university exchanges and working groups in research management.
  • The advisory bodies - the Research Council and the International Advisory Board - support the Board of Directors in the strategic (further) development of the Research Campus.
  • We communicate the joint research successes of the FCMH universities and successes in joint Campus Research Foci and other Profile Areas.
  • We promote the qualification of early-carreer scientists through the cross-university opening of qualification offers and our two structural pillars: The  Cooperative Doctoral Platform and the Graduate Centre for Engineering Sciences (PZI).
  • We coordinate our appointments in the joint Campus Research Foci and Profile Areas and carry out joint appointments with the involvement of the respective FCMH partners.
  • We promote individual co-optations of THM professors at university departments through an internal THM quality assurance process.
  • From 2017 to 2021, we were able to provide start-up funding for 36 collaborative research projects using the Flexi Funds instrument. Since 2023, we promote joint research activities through the instrument "Experimentation Spaces".
  • Through top-level personnel support, the two universities of Giessen and Marburg have established three qualification professorships and three junior research group leaders in "emerging fields" of top-level research, thus strengthening top-level research, young scientists, and cooperation within the network of the FCMH.
