Lung Health, Infections, and Vaccine Development

Despite significant therapeutic progress, respiratory and infectious diseases remain leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Global demographic shifts, including population aging, as well as changing environmental and exposomal risk factors, rising antimicrobial resistance, and emerging pathogens, pose growing public health challenges. The predominance of zoonotic respiratory viruses in major pandemics underscores the need for an integrated research approach linking respiratory and infectious disease biology.

Comprehensive investigation of perinatal, environmental, and age-associated influences on lung development, immune function, and infection susceptibility across the lifespan is essential. Deciphering the molecular and cellular mechanisms of host–pathogen interactions—across organ systems and within inter-organ communication networks—will enable the development of targeted, personalized preventive and therapeutic strategies to sustainably reduce disease burden. Enhanced understanding of the pathogenesis of highly pathogenic zoonotic viruses is also crucial for future pandemic preparedness.
