Lung and Heart

Short description

Lung and heart diseases are amongst the most frequent causes of death, in both Germany, and throughout the world. These diseases represent an enormous drain on the financial resources of the Health System. To date, the available therapies for most respiratory and heart diseases only relieve disease symptoms, but do not cure the disease itself. It is here that scientists from the Research Campus Focus “Lung and Heart” come into play, investigating the causes and mechanisms of disease in order to develop new approaches for prevention, diagnosis and therapy. Lung and heart research ranks as one of the most prominent national and international research foci in the research region of central Hessen.

Scientists at the Campus Research Focus, as well as the Max Planck Institute for Heart and Lung Research in Bad Nauheim, together with the University Hospital jointly run by the universities in Marburg and Giessen (UKGM GmbH) pool their expertise at the Research Campus of central Hessen not only to achieve a better understanding of the heart and lung systems, but also to fulfil their common mission of “translational research to combat widespread lung diseases”. For this purpose, expertise already gained in fundamental, disease and patient-oriented research in the field of heart and lung diseases is being intensified at a leading international level and is being integrated into new clinical concepts to improve patient care.
